Musa sumatrana ‘Zebrina’

This tropical, perennial ornamental banana has large, variegated burgundy and green, paddle-shaped leaves on red stems. It will grow to about 6′-8′ although smaller if container grown. Produces yellow flowers and small, seeded bananas, that while edible and not that enjoyable.

Musa sumatrana is native to Sumatra.

Cultivation Notes

Wants full sun but may need protection from hot sun. Li likes a moist soil but well-drained soil.

Additional Information

There has been conflict about the name of this plant, but usually known as either Musa sumatrana ‘Zebrina’ or Musa acuminata ssp zebrina. It is also sometimes listed as being cultivar Rojo.

We acquired this plant from Farmington Gardens - grown by Little Prince.
