While the name may conjure up thoughts about the novelty song by actor singer Shelby Fredrick “Sheb” Wooley titled “Purple People Eater”, it is its coloration that gives it its name. A rosette of thick leaves that radiate from the center are blue-green with reddish-purple spotting. The most intense coloration happens when in full sun. Leaf margins fold upward to show off yellow, orange, and cinnamon brown spines. At the end of each leaf is a cinnamon terminal spine.
