Leucadendron ‘Red Gem’ is a bushy shrub that reaches about 4′ – 6′ tall and wide. Its leaves are green with a small section of red near the rounded tip which is accentuated by fine silvery hairs. Somewhat similar to Safari Sunset, but a more compact growth habit. During the initiation of bloom (in late summer), the plant begins to take on a bronzy appearance – the reddish bracts surround the yellowish female cones.
Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established and like all Proteas, it does not like phosphorous.
