Aeonium 'Sunburst'

Aeonium ‘Sunburst’

This succulent comes from the Canary Islands and grabs your attention with its large colorful rosettes. It is reported that they can grow to become 16″ across, but so far I have only managed about 10″. The rosettes are on branched stems up to 24″ tall. Each leaf is a pale green tongue in the middle with a yellow outer and then it is fringed in red. The leaves lightly serrated.

Aeonium is native to Canary Islands.

Cultivation Notes

Aeoniums do not require a lot of care, but they do sulk below about 40F, so they need to come into the greenhouse over winter for us. Requires full sun (coastal) to bright shade and occasional watering for best color.

They are supposed to be deer tolerant, but they ate all the Aeoniums in the fall of 2022. This one did not survive the carnage.

Additional Information

Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 2012.

Found in Compost Heap,

Will remain in a pot because it needs winter protection. Unfortunately, it was eaten and uprooted by deer right before winter and it did not have the strength to make it through until spring, even in the greenhouse.

We acquired this plant from Annies.
