The Musa genus contains about 70 species including the banana and plantain. Technically they are herbaceous perennials, but their large pseudo trunk makes them appear more like trees. The pseudo trunk is made from the dead basal portions of leaf sheathes When the plant is ready to flower, it sends up a true stem that grows up through the sheath and droops back down towards the ground.
