There are 7 species of Mimulus which can be annuals, perennials or evergreen shrubs. They have paired leaves and 2-lipped tubular or trumpet-shaped flowers in terminal racemes or in the leaf axils. Mimulus prefer wet or moist areas and are not drought resistant.
Two species are native to eastern North America and the other five native to Asia, Australia, Africa, or Madagascar.
Recently moved in to the Phrymaceae family from Scrophulariaceae.
Name Derivation: From Latin mimus mime + -ulus; probably from the resemblance of the flower bud to a mask.
