Lewisia are native to western North America, and wonderful rock garden plants. They form a low, fleshy rosette of tough evergreen leaves, bearing large star-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer.
Drought tolerant, it needs impeccable drainage, and will even do well planted in crevices in a rock wall. Do NOT over water, especially in winter.
Name Derivation: Named for Capt. Merriweather Lewis, who - with William Clark - made the first transcontinental expedition across America (1804-1806)
Lewisia is in the family Montiaceae.
