Bulbous perennials, mostly endemic to Namibia and South Africa where they have winter rainfall. There are about 130 accepted species. More than 80% of them are found in the Western and Northern Cape (former Cape Province) of South Africa. Interestingly, Hyacinths, the family that they belong to, are Mediterranean, meaning that these plants probably date back to the Pangea era.
