There are about 70 species in this genus, mostly from China, Japan, Korea and Russia. Thousands of cultivare have been registered so far.
Hostas have become extremely popular given the extraordinary range of leaf colors, particularly with modern hybrids, that do well in shade.
Originally called Funkias, but now most people know them by Hosta or plantain lily. Hostas are herbaceous perennials, growing from rhizomes or stolons, with broad lanceolate or ovate leaves varying widely in size by species from 1–18 in long and 0.75–12 in broad.
