There are more than 140 species of Gardenias in the Coffee family. They are native to the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar, Australia and the Pacific Islands. That indicates that they originated from the super-continent of Gondwana, a particular passion of mine.
Evergreen shrubs and small trees with broad, dark green leaves that have a leathery texture. Flowers are solitary or in small clusters and white, or pale yellow in color. Some species are strongly scented.
