A genus of 14 to 32 sub-Saharan African species of geophytes (bulbs), many from South Africa. Most of them are spotted and found in valley grasslands of semi-arid areas, woods and forests. They are usually deciduous.
I feel sorry for this genus that the people who named it couldn’t come up with anything but ‘it looks like something else’. If they put it in the wrong genus to begin with and then moved it to a new genus, then the poor genus should have a name that somehow characterizes it, but that is not the case with these. So they are the plants that look like another plant!
