A genus of geophytes with about 180 species, each with large showy flowers on leafless stems above linear to sword-shaped foliage, sheathing at the base. They are found in seasonally moist areas, including marshes, swamps, depressions and along the sides of streams and lakes in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Most of the species are summer growers.
