The Maples are a large genus of deciduous shrubs and trees with about 200 species. They are widely spread through the temperate zones of the Northern hemisphere, with a concentration in eastern North America and China. They are easily identified by oppositely arranged leaves often with 5 lobes. They also have winged fruit known as samaras.
Name Derivation: Acrid (the Maple genus); also from a Latin word meaning sharp, in reference to the hardness of maple wood which was used for spears by Roman soldiers
